Free range gas guzzlers

Just listened to an interesting programme on Radio 4. Eating free range is like driving a gas guzzler, because raising a free range animal uses far more energy and other resources than a battery-farmed animal.

So there's no right answer to the question of what constitutes ethical food:
  • organic food pushes up the food miles,
  • locally produced food puts third world farmers out of business, leaving them starving, unable to afford medicine and education,
  • free range food is a very inefficient use of resources compared with battery farms,
  • lacto-vegetarians (that is, veggies who get their protein from dairy) have no use for male cattle, so they have to be shot at birth,
  • fairtrade... well, I can't think of anything bad about that, so you'll have to google it yourself.
